The Mid Norfolk Railway at Dereham which runs regular train rides through the beautiful countryside to Wymondham. The North Norfolk Railway which runs steam trains from Sheringham to Holt. This is a lovely ride along the Norfolk coast. Make sure you take the camera.
Gressenhall Rural Life Museum, a brilliant day out where you can learn how Norfolk people used to live. Wonderful for adults and children, especially as it has a working farm. Only 12 miles travelling too.
The Norfolk coast has a mixure of beautiful quiet villages and busier towns including Great Yarmouth where you will find Kiss-me-quick-hats, the Pleasure Beach and miles and miles of golden sand. The North Norfolk Coast is wonderful for birdwatching. The coast is made up of salt-marshes and sand dunes. There are Bird reserves at Titchwell and Cley which are world famous.
Snetterton Racing Circuit, which hosts British Super Bikes and Touring car championship races.
Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park, a must for children.
Lenwade Dinosaur Park, another children's favorite. Take a walk along the Dinosaur Trail, meet the animals animals in the Victorian walled garden. Meet wallabies, sheep, kune kune pigs, donkeys and then head to the Fun Barn to cuddle a rabbit or guinea pig, hold a hedgehog and help feed the lambs.
The Iceni Brewery for a look at the brewing of beer or the English Whiskey Company for a tour of the distillery.
Banham Zoo, a journey of only 20 miles from the cottage and then why not take a ride on the Safari Roadtrain before visiting the wide range of animals? Including large cats and giraffes.
Thetford Forest , Britain’s largest lowland pine forest. Home to 'Go Ape' which is centred around 30 miles of bike and walking trails from which to explore 50,000 acres of forest. Here you can explore the forest from the tree tops!
Pensthorpe Nature reserve and Gardens. Now this is a must for all bird watchers. You will be amazed at the number of birds which visit and can be viewed. With things for children to do too. Pensthorpe is home to BBC Spring Watch.
Swaffham Market Town, just six miles from Ashill is famed for the filming of Stephen Fry's Kingdom (Then named Market Shipborough). Wander around the town and find the locations used whilst filming. Swaffham has it's own Museum which specialises in Howard Carter's exploration of the Pyramids of Tutankhamon. Here you can also visit the large Wind Turbines at the Ecotech Centre and even at times walk to the top of the turbine and see the area from high.
For visitors who may have spent a few peaceful days in the countryside, perhaps a total contrast would be a day in Norfolk’s capital city Norwich. Only 30 minutes drive away Norwich is a wonderful place to shop, with the architecture being a fine blend of both ancient and modern. The Castle is a museum and hours can be spent here viewing both art and history. Buses also travel from the village to Norwich city centre, so you could relax and enjoy the countryside on your trip.
For those of us researching family history Norwich is the home of the Norfolk Records Office.
